Introduction
The Department of Permitting Services' (DPS) Web Site provides customers with direct access to real-time information maintained in the DPS Permit System as each project progresses through the development process. The status of the application/permit, the reviews that are planned/in progress/completed, and inspection information may be displayed using a variety of access methods. This document explains how to access and view current DPS Permit System information.

We welcome your thoughts and suggestions for providing additional services through this site. Please contact us at (240) 777-6360, or e-mail us at dps@montgomerycountymd.gov, or mail your comments to: Department of Permitting Services, 255 Rockville Pike, 2nd Floor, Rockville, Maryland 20850-4166.

How Do I Search the DPS Permit System?
The DPS Web Site provides four options for retrieving real-time data from the DPS Permit System: Search by application type and permit number, or search by zip code, or search for applications and permits for a premise address, or search for permits that are linked to a Contact Number. Each method is explained below.

Search by Permit Number
To search for a specific permit, select the Application Type from the dropdown menu, then enter the desired Permit Number, and click "Go". The DPS Web Site will then display details about the application (e.g., Site Address, Work Type, Application Date, etc.) and the status of the application/permit.

Search by Property Address
Enter the Street Number and Street Name into the designated fields and click the "Search" button to display a list of matching address records from the DPS Permit System. Then, click on the Street Name to display the list of permits that exist for the address. Next, select the desired permit type (e.g., Sediment Control, Building Residential, etc.) to view details for the application/permit.

Note that the Street Number and Street Name are required fields. All other fields are optional.

Search by Zip Code
Please enter a ZIP Code (5 digits, required entry) and click on the Search button to display a list of addresses in the desired ZIP Code. Note that the system will display only those addresses that have at least one application/permit in the DPS Permit System and will not list addresses where applications/permits do not exist.

The Street name field (optional) may be entered to narrow the search to a particular street within a ZIP Code. You may also enter a portion of the street name (e.g., the first few characters of a street name) to narrow the search within a ZIP Code.

After the list of addresses is displayed for your search, select an address to display all applications and permits. Then select the desired permit type to view detailed information for the application/permit.

Search Examples
1.  Entering 20905 for the ZIP Code and AMB in the street name field will return only addresses that start with AMB that are in the ZIP Code 20905.
2.  Entering 20905 for the ZIP Code and AMBERLEIGH in the street name field will return only records with a street name of AMBERLEIGH in the ZIP Code 20905.

Search by Contact Number
This search method provides the means to display all applications and permits that are linked to your Contact Identification number, and to schedule, cancel and reschedule inspection requests for permits linked to your Contact ID. This method requires that you also enter your designated Personal Identification Number (PIN) to gain access. This access method may useful for customers with several applications/permits in process at a given time.

To access DPS Permit System information using this method, enter your Contact ID and PIN in the appropriate fields, and click the "Sign in" button. Be sure to "Sign Out" when you are done.

Permit Status
The Status display is the default information page that is displayed for the three search methods above. The Status page displays information about the application (e.g., Site Address, Work Type, Application Date, etc.) and the status of the application/permit. Information is also presented for the construction valuation, the square footage for the work being undertaken, the associated Contractor(s) and their related Contractor Licenses. All information is real-time, retrieved and displayed directly from the DPS Permit System database.

Reviews & Conditions
To view information about the technical reviews performed for an application/permit, click on the "Reviews" button in the black menu bar. Review details are then displayed for the application/permit, including the review description, the status of each review, the name of the reviewer, and the start and completion dates for the reviews. A link is also provided on this page to other agencies that may be involved in the review process.

Status of Inspections
Click on the "Inspections" button in the black menu bar to display the inspections that are scheduled and/or have been performed for the specified permit. The inspection description, the status, location comments, and the scheduled and completed dates are shown.

Scheduling Inspections
Inspections may only be scheduled for permits that have been issued, and that have not already had an approved final inspection. Requests for building inspection(s) that are received before 12:00 p.m. will be scheduled for the next business day following the date of request. Requests for building inspection(s) that are received after 12:00 p.m. will be scheduled for the second business day following the date of request.

Requests for Right-of-Way inspection(s) and for Sediment Control inspection(s) must be scheduled directly with the assigned inspector. Please use the name and the telephone number printed on your permit to contact the assigned inspector. Inspection(s) are based on the inspector’s workload and availability.

To schedule an inspection, select the type of inspection from the "Inspection" dropdown menu. This is a required entry.

Then, select a preferred inspection date from the "Schedule Date" dropdown menu. This is also a required entry.

If you have a preference for a morning or afternoon inspection, select it from the "Time Preference" dropdown menu.

If you would like to pass along any brief notes to the inspector, enter them in the "Notes" area.

When all information is entered, click the "Schedule" button. If the inspection is successfully entered into the DPS Permit System, you will receive a seven-character inspection confirmation number. Please record this for your use; you will need it should you later wish to cancel/reschedule the inspection.

Canceling Inspection Requests
To cancel an inspection, you will need to enter the inspection confirmation number that was assigned when the inspection request was submitted via the DPS Web Site. The inspection confirmation number is a seven-character number that is assigned when the inspection request is made using the DPS Web Site. Inspection requests that are not submitted via the DPS Web Site will not have an inspection confirmation number and may be cancelled by calling 240-777-6300.

If you have misplaced or forgotten the inspection confirmation number, click on the "Inspections" button in the black menu bar to view the inspections that have been done and any that are awaiting inspection. Find the inspection type you requested (e.g., Close In) that matches the Scheduled Date for the requested inspection. The inspection confirmation number is the seven-character number in parentheses.

To cancel the inspection request, enter the inspection confirmation number and click "Cancel Inspection". You will receive an acknowledgement when the inspection request has been cancelled.

Sign-in
By signing in with your Contact ID number and Personal Identification Number (PIN), you can easily access information for all applications and permits that you have in the DPS Permit System. The application/permit's status, reviews and inspections information can be displayed. You may also schedule, cancel and reschedule inspection requests for permits linked to your Contact ID. This access method may useful for customers with several applications/permits in process at a given time.

To access DPS Permit System information using this method, enter your Contact ID and PIN in the appropriate fields, and click the "Sign in" button. Be sure to "Sign Out" when you are done.

Trouble in Signing-in?
If you have trouble signing-in with your Contact ID and Personal Identification Number (PIN), please contact us at (240) 777-6370 for assistance, or e-mail us at dps@montgomerycountymd.gov

After Signing-in
After you have signed-in with your Contact ID and your Personal Identification Number (PIN), the system will display a summary of the number of applications and permits associated with your Contact ID for each type of application/permit.

All applications that have been submitted for which a permit has not been issued are shown as "In Process" state. Applications for which a permit has been approved and printed are shown as "Issued". Inspections can be scheduled for these permits as required. Permits that have completed all construction and required inspections, and have an approved final inspection are shown as "Finaled".

To view a group of applications (In Process, Issued or Finaled), click on the appropriate option listed in the left side. Reminder: Only those applications that are associated with your Contact Id will be shown in one of the stages (In Process, Issued or Finaled). If your application or permit is not listed in any of the stages, please contact us at 240-777-6300.

After selecting the group of applications, the DPS Permit System lists each permit number in the group, the permit type and the premise address for the permit. To view only a particular type of application/permit (e.g., only electrical permits), select the appropriate type from the "Show only:" dropdown menu on the right side of the display. To view the status, reviews and inspections for a permit number in the list, click on the desired permit number.
